FAQ

How do composite sessions work?

Creating a fine art composite is a highly individualized, collaborative experience. It's a process of discovery and a flight of fantasy. We get to ignore the laws of physics and make our imaginations manifest. We'll engage in a dialogue and go on tangents, until a vision that speaks directly to you emerges. We'll talk extensively about concept, wardrobe, location, props etc., and figure out how to source what we need.

Next, we'll plan and execute the shoot. I'll walk you through each step, before, during and after. My goal is always to create a relaxed vibe for the shoot. I don't schedule multiple shoots per day, so you'll never feel rushed. You'll have my undivided attention and we'll take whatever time we need.

Composite shoots are often quite different than traditional shoots. They usually require additional elements be photographed to facilitate the concept. I might put you in strange positions, draped over chairs or ladders, or take shots of just your extremities, or have you fling your clothes/hair around for movement, or toss things in the air. You may need to play make-believe and pretend you're flying or looking at something that isn't there. I promise, no one but me will ever see the weird stuff.

Then, I'll create your composite. This part of the journey requires a small leap of faith. While everything else up to this point is a collaboration, the composite portion of the proceedings is where I go do my thing to create a unique piece of art with you at its heart. Presumably, you saw something in my work that spoke to you. Trust that I will use every bit of insight I've gleaned through the collaborative stage to create something you'll love.

You'll receive your finished composite(s) as a high resolution downloadable file on a private gallery site. Prints are available to order through this portal, or you can source your own*.

How do artful portrait sessions work?

In order to create a unique keepsake to be treasured, we'll spend some time prior to the shoot refine the aesthetic, the mood, the occasion or milestone you wish to capture. We'll pin down a look, location, wardrobe options, etc. Portrait sessions can be indoor or outdoor, day or evening. I have a portable "studio" I bring to you.

My goal is always to create a relaxed vibe for the shoot. I don't schedule multiple shoots per day, so you'll never feel rushed. You'll have my undivided attention and we'll take whatever time we need.

After the shoot, I'll do some general post-processing (exposure/color correction and color grading) before uploading all viable shots from which you'll select your included retouched images.

Then I'll complete that process and add any special treatments. While not strictly a composite, I will often (OK, usually) add a texture overlay and/or the odd enhancement to give your portrait that extra something. Occasionally, I'll drop in a different background. Any additional retouched images you purchase will include the special treatments, as well.

How do Animalia Sessions work?

Much the same as the other sessions, but with critters. We'll chat about your pet and their dispositions, likes and dislikes, preferred "motivators" and the like, prior to the shoot.

On the day of the shoot, we'll spend some time letting your pet get to know me and acclimate to the gear (I will adapt what I use to what the animal will tolerate.)

Then we'll shoot! I don't expect pets to take direction like people, so we just go with the flow, taking breaks as needed, until we get what we want. This can take some time, so we'll make sure to schedule when no one is in a rush.

I may recruit any humans present to assist me in capturing attention, holding leashes, redirecting and the like. I may also do the opposite, and ask folks/other distractions to step out if a pet seems too overstimulated to focus. Much like our pets run our homes, they get to run their photoshoot, too. We just follow their lead!

From there, we move to the applicable next step. If it's a straight portrait session, I'll do some general post-processing prior to you choosing your included retouched images. If it's a fine art composite, I'll move on to creative editing and you'll receive the finished composite(s).

When will I get my photos?

For Artful Portraits and Animalia Sessions, usually within two weeks. Fine Art Composites may take longer, due to the more intensive editing process. I can give you a better idea once a concept is finalized.

How many pictures will I receive?

For Artful Portraits, three fully retouched digital images are included in your session.

Additional retouched digital images may be purchased separately for $75.00 each.

...........................

Fine Art Composite Sessions include one custom digital composite image per concept. Additional digital composited images can be purchased at $195 per image. Three or more additional images are $150 each.

Generally speaking, unused composite images are not released as they can be, well, weird and not particularly aesthetically pleasing outside the context of the composite concept. However, if there are any that function well as stand alone portraits, they may be purchased for $75 per image, including retouching.

Optional prints of your images may be purchased directly through your client gallery or you can source your own lab. See Printing Section for more information.

What about prints?

Optional prints of your images may be purchased directly through your client gallery or you can source your own lab*.

I recommend using a lab that offers acid-free, archival quality papers. You're investing time, money, energy and emotion in your shoot. It's worth a little more to get high quality prints that will last for generations.

Paper options through the gallery site include Deep Matte (fine art) and Luster (semi-gloss) finishes. I personally print my composites on fine art matte papers. Portraits look great on either, depending on your preferred finish. Gallery wrapped canvas, metal and mounted prints are also available.

*Please note: I'm happy to set up a file to any printer's specs, but I cannot guarantee color or quality from an outside lab.

Where are you based and do you travel?

I'm located in the Inland Empire in Southern California, about an hour from Los Angeles. I'm happy to travel within a few hours in any direction and have a "portable studio" set up for location and in home shooting.

I'm open to traveling outside my local area at the clients' expense.

Are you LGBTQ+ friendly?

Yes! It's my mission to create images that capture my subject's true self. That only works if you get to be exactly who you are!

My pronouns are she/her. Please, let me know yours so I can address you correctly.

Do you shoot weddings?

Nope, sorry. I love weddings, but my wretched back will not stand up to the endurance test that is wedding photography. However, if you want to commission a fine art portrait in your wedding clothes, I'm totally down for that. I'm also available for engagement/anniversary portrait shoots.

Are you open to collaborations or TFP work??

Potentially! As schedule allows, if a project is in my wheelhouse and catches my fancy, I'm definitely open to exploring mutually beneficial relationships with other creatives.

I require model releases for any unpaid work allowing me to use resulting photos in my portfolio and promotional materials, as well as to exhibit them, submit to publications, enter competitions and sell prints and stock images.
